Fellowship In The Lord's Supper

Paul expresses the action that occurs during our joint participation in the Lord's Supper, in 1 Corinthians 10:16:"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?"

Pay special attention to the word" communion" in the King James Version, which occurs twice in this little verse. It is from our Greek word koinonia and carries the notion of participation and/or partnership. In fact, one very recent and reliable English translation [English Standard Version] of this verse has rendered koinonia as "a participation." In participating in the Lord's Supper every first day of the week (Acts 20:7 with 1 Corinthians 16:2), we become partners with God. Truly, fellowship in the Lord's Supper is fellowship with Christ, who is God the Son (Hebrews 1:8).

Please think for just a moment about one implication of this connection between the Lord’s Supper and fellowship with the Christ. Suppose one determines, as some do, not to assemble (Hebrews 10:25) on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7), to partake of the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:20). How then can that person have communion, fellowship, participation with Christ? Simply put, they cannot! They have chosen some secular activity over fellowship with Christ—fellowship found in the Lord's supper. This can't be right. So, where will you be on the Lord's Day?
