A MILESTONE

The American Heritage Dictionary defines "milestone" as, "A stone marker set up on a roadside to indicate the distance in miles from a given point. 2. An important event, as in a person's career, the history of a nation, or the advancement of knowledge in a field; a turning point."

Ancient milestones were set up to aid travelers in their journey toward major municipalities.  Essentially it showed the traveler how far he had come and reassured him that he was going in the right direction.

The Warners Chapel church of Christ, having been established in 1880, has been a lighthouse of the Gospel for 125 years.  Reading the rich history written by Herbert Harper, and in another book by Todd Hinson, one can vividly imagine the multi-week Gospel Meetings with M.C. Kurfees, Guy Woods, et.al.

I remember a lesson from the 2004 Carolina Lectures that was hosted here.  David Pharr related that when he was a  boy growing up in Wilkesboro, all their preachers came from Warners Chapel.

At Warners Chapel we still send our men to area churches to speak by appointment. We still support training men to preach in Africa and Indonesia.  Our men and women go every year to Nicaragua and Thailand on mission trips. We have begun a mentoring program for preachers needing direction and experience.  A larger effort, of a school of preaching is in the near future.

Our 125th celebration is not to draw attention to ourselves, but it will serve as a milestone that shows how far we have come and reassures us that we are going in the right direction.  May God continue to bless us in our efforts in serving Him.

Paul
