INDEPENDENCE DAY

A longstanding tradition in our country is the July 4th celebration.  If you would ask a wide cross section of people in this nation you would probably find that several would not know why we celebrate the Fourth of July, just that we do.  For many families across the nation, the Fourth of July is another time that they can get together and share time with each other.  As families grow, our children marry and create their own families and their own traditions.  In many cases they move for economic reasons that can sometimes distance them from the rest of the family.  But at times like the Fourth of July, they schedule vacation time to come, gather around the barbecue grill or at the beach and relive the joys of childhood.

The phrase, "Independence Day," takes on a new meaning for the child of God.  The first "Independence Day," was conceived when the thirteen original colonies sought out freedom from oppression and tyranny.  The Bible speaks about the oppression and tyranny of sin.  Paul says by inspiration that the intelligent person sees that they can no longer remain in sin because of its consequences  (Rom 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is  eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  The Bible says that those who seek freedom from sin can do so by their willingness to change their allegiance from sin to Christ, (Rom 6:18) Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

What about you?  Are you willing to make today, your Independence Day?
