HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day is a much honored and
revered day in our society. Most adult children try to make this day a
special one for their mother. The restaurants will be teeming with
well-meaning sons and daughters. Some trying to atone for their lack of
attention the rest of the year, but others sharing a day that distance and time
has hindered the close relationship that they wistfully remember.
However, there are many children that do not have fond memories of their childhood like the rest of us. Theirs was a childhood of neglect and severe poverty. When I worked with the school system in Orangeburg, it was disheartening to me to see children that came from homes of constant drug use and sexual abuse. Too often, single parents would leave a child in the care of a boyfriend/girlfriend who did not have the love for the child as did the parent, and abuse would often occur.
When we think of such things, we are mortified that a mother would permit her child to be neglected in such a fashion. We think that the child's welfare ought to be of primary consideration. Yet, by the same token, there are many who neglect their children's spiritual welfare. The consequences for that neglect, are certainly far reaching.
If you want to be the best mother you can be, then you should set the example in the home and for your children by becoming a Christian. Through your actions, you can provide spiritual training for your kids and leave them with lasting memories of a mom who loved the Lord.
