PALM SUNDAY
Palm Sunday is the name that has generally been applied to the Sunday that
immediately precedes Easter Sunday. Although Palm Sunday does not appear in the
Bible, Scripture does indicate a day when Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last
time in His earthly ministry. R.C. Foster, in his Life Of Christ, refers
to this day as Jesus’ Triumphal Entry. This event is recorded in Matthew
21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-44; John 12:12-19. “And the multitudes
that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David:
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And
when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?”
(Matthew 21:9-10). It would not take long for the inhabitants of Jerusalem
to discover who Jesus was. It was at the time of this Passover Feast that Jesus
ate with the disciples for the last time. Within a few days of his entry into
Jerusalem, Jesus was arrested and taken before Annas and Caiaphas, and then
before the Governor, Pontius Pilate.
By weeks end, Jesus hangs between Heaven and Earth. At one point, He was separated from God because of the sin of the world that lay upon Him. His shed blood insures that we have remission of sin (Ephesians 1:7). Our baptism depicts His resurrection from the dead (Romans 6:4-6). May we always be able to say, “Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
